Management Undergraduate Programme at SBS

Why Study Management at Strathclyde?

The Department of Management within the University of Strathclyde Business School runs a range of major international programmes, including the Strathclyde MBA. Consequently, we have a reputation for high quality, managerially relevant research in the areas of strategy, general management and international business.

We are committed to providing excellent educational experiences for all our students, and more recently have extended our portfolio to include undergraduate study in Management.

We are confident that graduates in this new principal subject will find themselves in high demand, in the market-place. The focus throughout the course will be on translating the latest managerial thinking into practical and usable outcomes. It will help you to understand the theory underpinning this subject area and develop the skills required to translate the theory into practice.

Our academic staff advise senior managers in the public and private sectors, both here and overseas. They will bring those experiences into the classroom and, using a range of teaching methods, provide an excellent grounding for those aspiring to a career in management.

Degree Structure

The duration of the BA single or joint Honours degree is four years. Students have the option of graduating with a BA Pass degree after three years. Management can be taken as a Principal Subject in combination with any other Business School subject.

Year 1 – Foundations of Management

The introductory class, Foundations of Management, considers the practice of contemporary management and the ways in which organisations have evolved. The intention is to understand the challenges facing today's managers by introducing a range of essential concepts and to equip you with the skills to think critically about management. You will also study the Business School’s Management Development Programme in Years 1, 2 and 3

Year 2 – Management in a Complex World

Students take three core classes in Management:

  • Understanding Organisations
  • Exploring Corporate Strategy
  • Management Decision-making

As a set, these classes build on the foundations class and develop key insights into organisation theory and strategic management.

Year 3 – Organisational Analysis and Strategic Management

Having established the basic vocabulary and grammar of the subject during Years 1 and 2, this year covers three further classes:

  • Management in the New Global Economy
  • Leadership
  • Ethics in Modern Business

By this point, students will have a sophisticated understanding of management, the key challenges faced by managers and the essential skills required by successful managers.

Year 4 (Honours)

In the Honours year, students select from a range of specialist electives in areas such as:

  • Strategy Dynamics and Change
  • Advanced Organisational Analysis
  • Critical Management
  • Managing Collaborations
  • Cross–cultural Management
  • Public Sector Management
  • Managing Diversity

There is also a General Paper and the opportunity to write a Dissertation on a subject of your own choosing.

Teaching Methods

Our teaching methods mirror our focus on managerial relevance and our close relationship to practice. All of our courses are taught by a mixture of formal lectures and tutorial sessions to consolidate and deepen your understanding of key concepts. A number of our courses also adopt problem–centred approaches where real organisations with real problems are used to illustrate how the theory translates to practice. We also use web–based learning environments and there is a range of support materials available on–line.

Key Features

Our teaching team have established international reputations in the areas of strategy, general management and international business. They are in high demand for their advice on everything from the reorganisation of the health service to the corporate strategy of major blue chip firms. People working at the leading edge of their subject areas will shape the design of the course, its delivery and the assessment methods used, thereby ensuring that the teaching programme is relevant and up–to–date.
